Blog is a short form for the word ‘weblog’. In January 2017 there were 332.8 million blogs online. Think of a blog as a regularly updated website or web page, typically one run by an individual or small group.
A blog is written in a conversational style. A blog ‘speaks’ directly to the reader, and the language needs to reflect that. Give your blog an informal feel. This will help you connect with your readers. It is a place to express yourself and to share your thoughts and your passions. It’s anything you want it to be – it is your own website.
We live in the Information Age and businesses know that it is not enough to just produce and sell products. Consumers want information and most companies now have a blog on their websites where they share knowledge (how to do things), tips, technical information, advice and general information about their products, product features and benefits, or maybe even updates about the business itself – new staff members or behind the scenes activities.
How do you get started?
You may want to guest blog to gain some confidence. Take a look at my Guest Blog Guidelines.
You could take the plunge and sign up to any blog platform, or (my favourite) WordPress. Opt for the free version to start with. You can choose a free theme which gives you a template for the layout and colours etc and then you just post your first piece and away you go!
You may want to consider my ‘Blogging Starter Kit’ course to get you off to a good start.
A blog is about establishing yourself as an expert in a field. Or it’s about drawing your customer into the more personal side of your business. I think if you haven’t considered a blog for your business yet, that you have a think about it and start creating content your customers will love.
Be clear about why you want to blog, and you will enjoy the process and sharing your passion and knowledge with a global audience.
