Hayley Joy had been on the hamster wheel for 15 – 20 years. She was just chasing, not really focused, and had lost connection. And she was not realising the impact it was having on her body, mind, and soul. She gave up smoking because she could hear herself wheezing at night. She knew that she was in trouble at the ripe old age of 40. And she was bored.
One day Hayley realised she was down in the dumps. She had never done ‘blue’ before. She had never done anxiety. And so she didn’t really know what was happening when she had a complete and utter breakdown. Hayley’s entire body shut down. It wasn’t just a nervous breakdown – it was psychological, physiological, emotional – everything!
Hayley couldn’t function. It was a struggle to get out of bed. And at 2 am she found herself pacing the hallway in her home, not able to sleep and battling waves of anxiety. She knew that she was in deep trouble.
Finding connection
After seeking support, Hayley did a lot of work on herself, without the use of any drugs. She learned about tools to harness life and turn her negativity and OCD into positives. The lady she was working with asked Hayley one day, what she wanted to do with her life – what she really wanted to do, especially if it did not have to be about money.
“What would move you to the one thing if you could go and do now it right now?” she asked.
And Hayley replied, “I want to go out into the world and make maligned women feel special. I want to open a plus-sized clothing store that is 100% dedicated to women of all shapes and sizes.”
And the lady jumped in, “Right! Sign a lease. You are opening a shop!”
“Oh no! I have never been in retail before! When the economy is bad, and the government is bad, the world is bad.” Hayley felt the challenge.
She was tasked to have a lease signed for retail space by the end of the following week. And so it happened. A week later she had signed a five-year lease. That was 15 years ago!
The secret
Hayley had to go through a complete breakdown and loss of connection so that she could understand how she would serve future clients who had been as traumatised as she had been. She would make a deep connection with them on a level of trust. Because these clients need someone to be genuine.
