I have never struggled to find content for my writing. I find conversation, ideas, and inspiration in the world around me. And yet, so many people ask how I come up with blog prompts.

You know your field

The first ‘port of call’ for your blog content is your field of interest, expertise, experience, and knowledge. This is what you care about and what you want to share with the world. If you did a course, your course content is where you will find topics to write about. Maybe your essays, or your topics of discussion in your class. Or the notes you took in lectures or training. There is so much information that you were taught, researched or explored, which could keep you blogging for years to come.

FAQs

In your field or hobby, people, no doubt’ ask you questions. I often ask a friend who loves gardening, about how to prune and care for roses. I am sure I am not the only friend who asks her for gardening advice. These questions are each a blog, or even a series of blog posts.

Prompt words

This morning I scrolled through the TV guide on Sky. The screen was full of words to use as blog prompts.

Life Coach blog

If you are a life coach, there are loads of ideas just on this screen above:

  • Legend – what does that mean? Does it inspire action?
  • Tomorrow – do we hold onto tomorrow in order to procrastinate? Is tomorrow an inspiration for a better day than today?
  • Fellowship – what does it mean in today’s life? Have we lost it? Where do we find it and what can it do for our mental health?
  • Team – what are the dynamics of a team? How can others bring out the best in us and how can we lead a team with compassion and inspiration?
  • Destiny – is this a fallacy? Or do we have an impact on our destiny?
  • Heart – how do we live every day with ‘heart’? What does a broken heart mean? How can we overcome a broken heart? Do we protect our heart too much? Or do we live wearing our ‘heart on our sleeve’?
  • Are you being served? – do we need to create boundaries? How do we find balance in giving and receiving? How do we accept praise and support from others? Does our career, partner or life serve us?
  • The rock – is it a good idea to always be the rock in relationships? Or should we be more vulnerable?
  • Middle – is being in the middle ‘safe’ ground? Do we spend too much time ‘in the middle’ without stepping into a more challenging space?
  • Hate – how has this taken over society? Do we all have an element of hate in our hearts? How do we overcome this powerful force?
  • Cost – every action has a cost? Do we focus on the cost too much? Does the thought of a ‘cost’ hold us back?
  • Select – how do we filter and select what is good for us?

Almost a month of blog prompts

There is almost a month’s worth of blog posts using just one image from the TV if you write 2 blog posts per topic. One blog post on each topic could be the theory behind the concept – what the experts say. And the other could be your view, your experience, and how you manage that aspect of life. There are so many more prompts on that image, but this gives you a place to start.

There are so many more prompts all around you if you open yourself to creativity.

Be bold and explore!

A history blog

If you happen to be writing a history blog, that same screen of words could inspire all sorts of topics:

  • Legend – how does history create a legend? Who are legends in their time, and why?
  • Tomorrow – if you could change the course of history, what could you create for tomorrow?
  • Fellowship – what does the word mean in historic settings? Religious scenarios?
  • Team – how does an army use team tactics to function? Why have teams failed in the past?
  • Destiny – there are many soothsayers, witches, and futurists. Share their stories and the impact they had on the world and the people of the time.
  • Heart – why did the kings of the past feel so strongly about their hearts? Many buried them separately. What about the kings and queens who ruled with their hearts?
  • Are you being served? – slave history, the manorial system, serfdoms, knights, royal courts and all their conspiracies.
  • The rock – the history of Gibraltar.
  • Middle – territories that are located in the middle of a war. The middle child in some famous historic families.
  • Hate – history is full of hate!
  • Cost – what things cost in the past. And of course some of the most famous purchases in history – crown jewels, London Bridge etc.
  • Select – the process of selection in the army, court jesters, wives, kings and queens. Many kings overlooked their heirs and chose their ‘spares’.

Other niches

You can use that list for almost any other niche blog – gardening, cooking, politics. Each word on that image will prompt you according to your interests. And even if the link is tenuous, it is still a prompt and an opportunity to explore a theme within your niche.

Weekly blog prompts

Google likes you adding content as often as you can. And of course, we need to keep Google happy so that it keeps our content high up in the search. The absolute minimum is every 90 days, but if you can do it more regularly, brilliant! Weekly is a good option as this is generally quite achievable if you put your mind to it, it is rewarding and your audience (and Google) will love you loads!

If you would like a weekly blog prompt to take the stress out of coming up with a topic, you can sign up for my free blog prompt email list. Whatever your niche, topic, or field of interest, this email series will give you something to consider for your weekly blog for a full year.

Most importantly, think of blogging as an opportunity to share more of yourself, show yourself as an expert, and inspire others to explore further. It is not a chore, it’s playtime!

Make it fun so that you are excited to sit down and blog, and you will reap the rewards, for sure!
