Our prompt at my creative writing class with teacher Alison Clink was ‘If God had a job’. This was my short story.
Godfrey pushed the cleaning trolley quietly into the Security Council chamber. Here some of the world’s biggest decisions are made – presidents, prime ministers and political leaders come together to tackle global problems. And when God decided to take on the human form, to live amongst his people, this was an obvious place for him to be. But, of course, he wouldn’t have paperwork to show what qualifications he had and most importantly he wouldn’t have a CV to list his experience and references which he needed for the ‘important’ jobs.
“Without the cleaner, the cogs in this planetary machine would jam,” he thought. “Besides, the cleaner has access to everyone in the organisation. This is an opportunity to have an impact, without them even realizing it!”
“Perfect plan, Godfrey!” God was impressed with himself.
He had conjured up this plan as he had watched the world deteriorate into war, famine, and unhappiness.
“Time to clean this planet up,” he said, “one office at a time!”
