The Honeysuckle is native to the northern hemisphere. There are apparently around 180 different species of this glorious plant. Because of its diversity, gardeners are focused not only on the beauty of the plants in their gardens, but also on the fragrance. And most importantly their flowers attract bees. Some Honeysuckles are unscented. But to enjoy the wonderful fragrance of this plant, get one of the climbing varieties. These tend to me more scented.
For the summer months
To enjoy the beautiful Honeysuckle in your garden throughout the summer, plant a Belgica variety to flower early in the season. Serotina is a late bloomer. Lonicera Halliana (or Japanese Honeysuckle) is semi-evergreen and very fragrant. The soft cream flowers are easily pollinated by long-tongued bees.
Another very fragrant and new variety is called ‘Rhubarb and Custard’ which grows well in a pot and is perfect for a smaller garden.
Dire Straits
In 1980, Dire Straits made reference to the heavenly Honeysuckle in their song called ‘Expresso Love’:
“She gets the sun in the daytime
Perfume in the dusk
And she comes out in the night time
With a honeysuckle musk”
This summer, get some Honeysuckle in your garden. Not only will it bring colour, but also attract the bees. And your sanctuary will have a sensational scent.
