What is at the bottom of your to-do list?
To keep track of what I need to do in a day, week or month, I have a written to-do list. I love crossing off completed items. Thankfully I have evolved from using a 1980s FiloFax. I know loads of people use Trello. I have also used to great success for projects. But I still love the feeling of crossing things off, physically.
But some things just get moved to the next day or the next week. Today I looked at those items, which, for months have remained incomplete. I thought about why I am never getting around to them.
Perhaps:
- They are boring to do
- Some of them I really don’t need to do. Maybe it has been so long now, that I no longer need to bother anymore
- The tasks are too big or too small
- “Too difficult” also gets moved down the list
- And the most obvious – “nice to do”, but not that important
I looked at the “nice to do” and realised these are things I would love more than anything to fill my day with. But “I will get around to it one day.”
So, today, I am starting at the bottom of my to-do list. These items are keeping me stuck. I am not moving forward, and maybe these items could have a much bigger impact on my life than I believe.
Here is an insight into the bottom of my to-do list:
- Work on my next book
- Sign up for another philosophy course
- Ring one friend today to check-in
- Plan my podcast interviews for my Celebrate Southern Africa brand
Try it today. I would love to hear how you get on.
